Western culture has tended to regard feet as nothing more than an ugly form of walking apparatus, to be hidden inside all manures of footwear. But recently, reflexology which is said to release the bodys own healing powers principally through manipulation of the feet-has focused attention on this once over looked and despised area of the human body. The modern science of reflexology had its origin in zone therapy which was first conceived by an american doctor, William Fitzgerald, at the begining of this century.Dr Fitzgerald- an ear nose and throat specialist had noticed that pacients with low pain thresholds tended to clench there fists or teeth when in pain, therby inducing pressure, and consequently gaining some relief.he researched the apparent anaesthetic effect of prolonged pressure on those areasof the body which he had discovered to have reflex connection with other parts.Fitzgeralds, discovery (or perhaps rediscovery, since similar therapeutic treatment was already known in India and China, as well as in ancient Egypt was that the body is divided longitudinally into ten zones. These run upwards from between each of the ten toes, through the fingers- when the hands are placed on the thighs to the head.Medical problems in one part of a zone, he realised could be treated by applyng pressureto any part of the body in the same zone. Reflexology is a holistic healing technique that relies on treating the feet as a reflection of the whole body. The holistic approach to healing regards illness not as a static situation located in one part of the body.A physiotherapist Eunice Ingham discovered that the feet, owing to there great sesitivity, were the most receptive part of the body through which treatment could be applied. gradually she mapped the entire feet, relating particular organs to specific areas of each foot.Ingham also believed that the relief experienced by her patients was because of her special method of compression massage would eliminate crystalline deposits in the feet.Such deposits of uric acid and excess calcium, which result from toxic build up, can be spotted easily. If you press your foot down on to a hard surface and then examine its lower section, you should be able to see small lumps pushing out against the surface of the skin.Massage certainly does help disperse this acid build up to the benefit of the bodys system. But how does reflexologyactually rectify other malfunctions? Some belive that the treatment stimulates some of the 7,000 nerve endings in the feet and that this sends messages to other parts of the body.

Treatment involves applying pressure to the precise reflex points with the tip of the thumb,or the fingers. The pressure applied is firm but not heavy, and in different parts of the feet, different sensations will be felt by the person recieving treatment.Reflexology is also a diagnostic technique- which means it can be used to find out where imbalances are in the body.So if you had a headache, try putting pressure on the big toe, just pressing the thumb on the big toe, can relieve headaches.where there is a problem in the body, by using pressure points on the feet that represents the part of the body you are having problems, just by putting pressure on that point , you will proberbly feel a pain on that area of the foot, its like crystals and by holding the pressure there it does give some relief. it may not be immediate and you might have to do it several times.
