I love seeing all the birds come in my garden
There are a few in particular that are special to me
There is this little sparrow, that comes up to me
and i feed him digestive biscuits...
He always seems to appear when i am in my kitchen
he sits on the window ledge and taps at the window
and he opens his beak, well he cant ask any clearer
than that, he wants feeding.
I find it very rewarding to have these birds come up to me
I feel privileged that they trust me, and yes i do talk to them.
When i sit in the garden, i have the biscuit ready
its amazing how tame they are,
I do get a lot of birds in my garden, i think they get used
to you being there and the trust in you they have.
There is this female blackbird that makes a sort of calling
sound if i am not out in the garden, obviously to let me know
she is there.i leave my back door open in the summer
and one particular day i was in my living room
I could hear her calling me, well i was just reading the paper
she kept on and on so in the end i got up and went into the
kitchen, and the blackbird was sitting in my kitchen...lol..
so naturally i fed her, she then just toddled off back out
into the garden, When my granchildren come round
and if they are in the garden, Sam shouts out NAN your
bird is here....
I was digging in the garden one day and the blackbird
appeared ....she didnt seem bothered at all, as i went
along the garden, she followed me.Then it dawned on me
she was after worms, so there i was looking for worms
for her, she would take the worm and fly off...and a little while
later she would come back, she did this several times taking
the worms...i thought she must have babies to feed.
A couple of weeks later, i was so amazed, i heard the blackbird
in the garden, and got the biscuits out to feed her, and there
she was with her babies... i felt quite humble, i got a bit choked
to think she had brought her babies to show me,
and i am sure if she could speak she would have told her babies
you will be ok in this garden, you get digestive biscuits ...lol
The Baby Dove
One evening when my husband had come home from work
he put his car in the garage,he comes walking in doors
with a box....he said look whats in here, it was sitting by the garage
on the floor, i dont think it can fly and if i leave it there
it will either get run over or a cat will get it
inside the box was a baby dove....I didnt think it would be alive
the next morning, but it was....I telephoned the RSPCA
to aks advice on what to feed it
I was quite put out to be told
to put the dove back where we found it.
So i said but it will either get run over or a cat will get it
and i was told...well thats nature.....I thought ...no way..
i would be sending the dove to its death.
i asked in the pet shop what they advised to feed it,
as the dove was young and couldnt peck at seeds
Any way it was a hard boiled egg that i fed the dove with
i got some tweezers and put bits of the egg in its mouth
i filled an egg cup with water and gently pushed the doves
beak into the water, I fed her several times during the day.
i had the box on the floor by the back door, and the dove used
to sit on the edge of the box.and at night i put the dove inside the
box on some hay.In the morning i would have to clean round her
bottom...i had to keep her clean, the dove didnt think much of me
doing this, but it had to be done.
I really didnt expect the dove to live, young birds rarely do
but it thrived, it would toddle up and down my kitchen
my grandchildren loved it, but i tried to tell them that the dove
was wild creature and not to keep touching it, mind you it was hard
not to, it was a dear little thing. One week had gone by and the dove was
trying to fly, so i would take it in the garden and there i was flapping
my arms about...lol..trying to teach it to fly.
Then one morning the most amazing thing happened
i had the back door open, and the dove was sitting on the edge of its box
when 2 doves landed on the grass.....The baby was flapping its wings
so i put the baby on the floor and watched what it would do
it ran straight up to the doves that were pecking at seeds,
At first the adult dove took no notice of the baby, it was quite funny
the baby was following the adult dove round the garden,
then all of a sudden the adult dove folded its wings round the baby
and started to feed it,it was the most amazing thing i have ever seen
I wished i had the cam corder ready to film it
When the adult dove had finished feeding the baby, it flew off
i brought the baby back in doors, i couldnt risk leaving it out.
The adult dove came back at lunch time, so i let the baby out
to get fed,and to bring it back in after
i made a note of the time that the adult dove came in the garden
so the next morning i put the baby on a branch on the tree in
my garden, and i watched for the adult to come,
as soon as the adult flew into the garden, the baby started to call to it
the adult dove flew to the tree and fed it.
then as the days went on , that adult dove knew where the baby was
because when it flew in my garden it sat on top of the fence, looking
to my back door.
the baby....and the adult dove stopped going to the baby and made the
baby come to it to be fed,The baby managed to fly the short distance
Then i started to leave the baby out on the branch for a bit longer,
instead of bringing it back in doors after it had been fed.
it didnt seem to attempt to fly , only when the adult had come back into the
garden.By the third week, the baby was flying quite well from tree to tree
and i would leave it out almost all day, i kept checking it to see if it was ok
It was now able to peck at seeds, and was growing quite well
i would still bring the baby in doors at about five oclock in the evening.
It was getting harder not to fuss the dove to much, i was worried the
mother might reject it.Then on the fourth week i had to decide the time
had come to leave it out, it was flying well and could feed it self
So it was a Sunday evening i decided to leave the dove up the tree,
mind you i kept going out there to see if it was ok,
I was still dithering about weather to bring it in or not.
The next morning i went out to have alook, the dove had flown off.
i did look all round the garden, but there was no sign of it
I just hoped it was ok, so thats my story about the baby dove
and it prompted me to write the poem about it .
